While many Texans have their minds focused on the Presidential Election, most are unaware about the ongoing senate race. Democrat Colin Allred and Republican Ted Cruz are battling for the Texas senate seat, but only one is allowed to have the job.
Cruz has already been heard of by many Texans because he had already been the Texas senator for many years, and also ran for the presidential election in 2016. However, this year’s race may not be as easy for Cruz as many expect. A Democrat newcomer, Allred, has joined this year’s race. Allred has thrown many new challenges toward Cruz, including criticizing Cruz’s new proposed border policy. While many would have expected for Cruz to bounce back easily, the opposite has happened. Instead of taking Allred head on, Cruz has backed away from many topics, including sensitive ones such as abortion and drug trafficking. This has allowed for Allred’s numbers to increase dramatically, which is shocking since Texas is a mostly Republican-based state. While many think Cruz will still win, he will need to make a major change in order to regain favor.
While some may think senate races are not important, it is quite the opposite. Senate seats are valuable, as the senator is supposed to speak for the people. Senators also make decisions at the state level, many of which can affect the entire state. So regardless of which policy wins the outcome, one should vote as they see fit.
