Before his induction as the 47th, Donald Trump promised change through multiple documents signed. His first proclamation was recently made on February 9, 2025, with the change of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, and adjusting the day itself to national ‘Gulf of America Day’.
Our 47th president signed this order on the day of his inauguration, which was January 23, 2025. However, he only officially changed the name of the Gulf on February 9, since the executive order was made on his first day in office and gave a name change time limit of 30 days. This executive order stated:
“The Gulf will continue to play a pivotal role in shaping America’s future and the global economy,” Trump said, “and in recognition of this flourishing economic resource and its critical importance to our Nation’s economy and its people, I am directing that it officially be renamed the Gulf of America.”
The proclamation itself was signed later, on February 9th. In the official declaration that formerly recognized this adjustment, Trump acknowledged the importance of the Gulf with this being said.
“I took this action in part because, as stated in that Order, “[t]he area formerly known as the Gulf of Mexico has long been an integral asset to our once burgeoning Nation and has remained an indelible part of America.”
Those close to Trump have had mainly positive reactions. Trump made this address and proclamation on his way to Superbowl LIX while he flew in an Air Force 1 jet over the newly named Gulf of America.
“It’s official! Proclamation signed aboard Air Force 1 above the Gulf Of America!” Eric Trump said.
Trump, at least his official statements, as well as in the document itself seemed quite pleased with this difference, expressing his feelings of a “fitting” change, as he stated.
“We’re going to be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, which has a beautiful ring. That covers a lot of territory,” Trump previously said at his first news conference. “The Gulf of America. What a beautiful name. And it’s appropriate.”
With this recent modification, not only has Trump expressed his appreciation for the change, his political office has also expressed positive affirmations towards this idea and this change as a while, marking February 9, 2025 as national ‘Gulf of America Day’.
