This week, President Donald Trump spoke out about potentially serving a third term. Many have viewed this as a potential dictatorship, while others see this as potential stability for the future.
Many Americans have stressed feelings of uncertainty and cautiousness over President Trump’s recent claims. Trump’s wanting a third term would shake up years worth of ruling by the 22nd Amendment, which prohibits any president from seeking a third term. A majority of Americans believe that this would shatter the amendment, causing a restructure to the Constitution. This leads to many Americans fearing that the supremacy of the US would soon come to an end.
On the other side of the aisle, Trump supporters root for this change with adamant positivity. They believe that a third term would give presidents longer time periods to work on issues current campaigns had not resolved. In addition, the last time a president served a third term was when Franklin Delano Roosevelt was in office. This term was efficient, so it gives supporters a possibility that a third term for Trump would work as well.
So which side is right? It’s hard to tell right now, but many believe that a third term should not be had. However, for now, this potential edict is not on the drawing board for US politics. If it ever comes to the board, the government should take a serious look at this event, and make sure they make the right decision.
