Thirteen Central Heights High School students will be recognized at the October school board meeting for receiving some of three “National Recognition Awards” distributed by the College Board.
The recipients became eligible for these awards through their academic achievement at Central Heights High School, which is awarded through their PSAT scores. In order to qualify for any one of the awards, students must score in the top 10% of test takers in the respective categories.
“To demonstrate academic achievement” [students must] be one of the top 10% of test takers in their high school, among first-generation college students in their state, and/or among rural and small-town students in their state,” counselor Autumn McDaniel said.
Students can be eligible for all three awards: the School Recognition Award, the First-Generation Recognition Award and the Rural and Small-Town Recognition Award. At CHHS, two students received all three.
“Having our students receive these awards gives us the opportunity to highlight the academic excellence offered at Central Heights High School,” McDaniel said. “It also gives us a tangible way to celebrate student achievement.”
These awards are also beneficial because they can lead to more opportunities in students’ academic careers. It displays the excellence of the recipients, making them more desirable to colleges.
“Recipients can also list these awards on their college admissions applications,” McDaniel said, “possibly leading to additional scholarship opportunities.”
