Central Heights High School students will be taking the PSAT and SAT on October 15 at 8 a.m. This test will be mandatory for all students grades 10th-12th. Therefore, students should know more about what these tests are and why students are required to take them.
The SAT is a standardized, computer-based test that measures student academic readiness for college. This test is also looked at by many colleges for admission decisions and course placement. Some high schools don’t require students to take the SAT, but states such as Colorado, Delaware and seven others have SAT requirements.
The PSAT is a “practice” SAT to help students have a better understanding of what the real SAT will look like when they take it. The PSAT can also qualify high-scoring juniors for the National Merit Scholarship Program. The PSAT can be good for students who struggle with test-taking or test anxiety, or to help SAT preparedness.
CHHS seniors will take the SAT next week, while sophomores and juniors will take the PSAT. In March 2026, seniors will have another opportunity to take the test. Juniors will also take the SAT in March.
A good SAT score can range from 1350, which puts a student in the top 10 percent nationally, but a score of 1050 and up is an acceptable score as well and would put the student in the national average. As for PSAT scores, it is generally the same. A score of 1050 to 1075 would put them in the 75th percentile, but scores of 1200 are considered more advanced.
