Three Student Council members, led by sponsor Dr. Coker, have been providing science labs for the two life skills classes on campus, ranging from “living necklaces” to root beer floats.
The life skills students have been mostly optimistic about each activity. The teachers who instruct these students daily have seen improvement in their participation.
“The biggest moments are their facial expressions, whether that be ‘wow’ or ‘oooh’ or them trying to understand. Seeing them asking questions is exciting,” life skills teacher Warren Butler said. “Also, we will be going over something in class and then they will recall something from the lab.”
The three StuCo members, Ian Reed, Chris Perez and Calla Rudolph, each have set groups that they work with every Friday during 6th period. All three of the members have positive outlooks on the labs.
”I like how I have bonded with Carley and Austin. I feel like we are having a good time,” Perez said. “I love that I’m teaching them new things and encouraging them on their path of learning.”
Dr. Coker plans and provides materials for each activity, leaving the seniors to work together to explain and execute the lab. While this is a challenge for them, each member has had Coker as a prior teacher, so they are familiar with her labs.
“All of the labs that we do with the life skills students are all the same, but modified to fit their goals, needs and learning objectives,” Coker said. “I feel like it is important for our entire blue devil community to feel like a family, and this is our way to give back.”
