FCCLA, or Family Career and Community Leaders of America, offers many opportunities for students to be involved in their community and take initiative in the world around them.
It is a student-led organization offered at Central Heights that is associated with Family and Consumer Sciences classes.
“[FCCLA] offers leadership roles, community service opportunities, and involvement in competitive events,” advisor Cynthia Nichols said.
Members are also able to compete at the region, state and national level in competitions called STAR events. STAR stands for Students Taking Action with Recognition.
“The competitions are the best part,” Nichols said. “I love helping to get FCCLA more noticed for what the club participates in.”
Those who competed in STAR events or took a Family and Consumer Sciences Assessment during last school year were successful.
“All Central Heights members that tested last year earned a gold medal,” Nichols said, “and in STAR events, so many students got the chance to compete against their state and even their country.”
Nichols believes that skills gained in the club allow students to grow into the strongest version of themselves.
“FCCLA gives students the confidence to step out of their comfort zone and gives them real-world skills for their lives,” Nichols said.
