After three years in FCCLA, juniors Lyla Robison and Bella Downing recognize the benefits of being involved in the club and seek to grow their chapter’s and community’s support.
The project Bella and Lyla are working on this year is called STAR, or Students Taking Action with Recognition. When asked about the project, Bella was outright with her goals.
“Our project’s goal is to enlighten the community on the aspects that FCCLA brings to young students,” Bella said. “Whether this be life skills, leadership, collaboration, team building skills, or even public speaking.”
FCCLA usually has to do with information that can be used to help the student body in Texas, not just Central Heights. The projects vary from health nutrition all the way to life skills such as the ones being demonstrated by Bella and Lyla’s project. Bella and Lyla have plenty of experience with this kind of project after all.
“Me and Lyla were national champs, getting first place at the Orlando National Conference,” Bella said. “This kind of made us want to do an event like this, since we already had some experience in it and knew that we were good at it.
Bella and Lyla have done a project like this before, so they have some experience when it comes to FCCLA projects as a whole. However, all these projects from FCCLA present some kind of good service to those that see them. So, what is the end goal for this project?
“We were hoping to promote not only the club itself but the opportunities it can provide for students and community members,” Bella said. “Students learn such useful skills in the club like public speaking and communication skills and they can also get scholarships.”
Bella and Lyla presented this exact project to judges in Douglass on January 23, and the feedback was seemed to be positive.
“I think a lot of the students and staff there were very interested in the club since it’s unlike any other club there,” Lyla said. “It opens up opportunities for students who have other interests that aren’t agricultural or FFA type things.”
So, the STAR project focuses on the development of life skills that young students need to grow and develop in life, while also informing the people about the need for an FCCLA program of their own by highlighting the positive effect it’s had on young students. Robison also highlighted her hopes for the future of FCCLA through this project and the many more projects to come.
“I’m hoping that our members grow in leadership skills, te
