Track season has started here at Central Heights. Last year, the CH runners accomplished much in their competitions. Fans and family members can’t wait to see their achievements this upcoming season. Their season opener was last Thursday, Feb.19, at Nacogdoches High School.
With Central Heights being a 3A school, runners faced many bigger competitors. However, this didn’t stop them from having victorious outcomes.
“We were the smallest school there. Everybody else was 4A or 5A, but we really competed well,” head Track and Field coach Ben Belshaw said. “We had some good finishers. Some won their race, or even if they didn’t win, they were competitive, and you could see that in the way they were running. I was really excited about that. We could have been intimidated by a meet like that, but we weren’t.”
This first meet not only kicked off the season, but also revealed some areas of improvement for the team.
“Something we need to work on is just pushing ourselves a little more in practice to then put us at that level,” Belshaw said. “Now that we’ve seen some things [from the previous track meet], we can work on being more efficient in practice, doing things better in practice, and working harder in practice.”
The Track and Field team shared many memories from the past season, and they are eager to find out how well they will do in the new season.
“One of my favorite memories from last season was hitting 5:05 on my mile for the first time,” freshman Gunner Goss said. “I’m looking forward to seeing how far I can make it this year.”
The sky is the limit for the new records the runners will be breaking this season.
“A goal I have for others is for them to set a new personal record, and I am looking forward to seeing people advance and Micah and Marcos hopefully going to state,” manager Kaylee Dorman said.
The team can’t wait to experience all the exciting events in store.
“I enjoy seeing people progress and keeping track of it all,” Dorman said. “Track is awesome and a lot of fun.”
