In Texas, every student from third grade up should know what STAAR testing is. STAAR stands for State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness. It is a mandatory test for public schools that is taken, starting grade 3 and continuing all the way through high school, structured to measure how ready students are for the next grade. Many students and parents believe the STAAR test is unnecessary and should be eradicated.
There are many different opinions on how beneficial this test really is. For example, a student may have major test anxiety and do poorly on their STAAR test. One day of struggle shouldn’t represent the student’s entire academic performance for the year
Although some people say that STAAR is helpful to see what all a student has learned throughout the year, this information isn’t always very accurate. It is much more reliable to look at the students’ grades that they have made all year. This also shows throughout the year how, and when they have grown academically.
STAAR is a very controversial topic for many students, parents and teachers. STARR has shown to have many cons and should be left in the 2025 – 2026 school year.
